The singer was taken to hospital last week

American actor and singer David Cassidy passed away last night at 67 years old. Cassidy’s family announced this in a moving statement to People. David was renowned for his role as Keith Partridge on the TV show The Partridge Family.

The actor died in hospital due to kidney and liver failure.

Keith Partridge
The name ‘David Cassidy’ might not immediately ring a bell with the younger generation, but in the 70s David was the heartthrob of his generation. Teenage girls covered their walls with posters of the pop star. As an actor he was best known as the ideal son-in-law Keith Partridge in the TV show The Partridge Family, which aired from 1970 till 1974.

Cassidymania
Similar to girls walking around with ‘Bieber fever’ these days, many teenage girls suffered from ‘Cassidymania’ back in the day. The actor also stole many a heart with his songs, like the hits Cherish and Daydreamer. Unfortunately, a long life wasn’t in the cards for the teenage heartthrob. In a moving statement to People magazine the family announced his death: “David died surrounded by those he loved, with joy in his heart and free from the pain that had gripped him for so long. Thank you for the abundance and support you have shown him these many years.”

Hospitalisation
Last week, David was hospitalised due to kidney and liver failure. In 2008 the singer revealed that he struggled with an addiction to alcohol and drugs, for which he spent some time in rehab a few years later. At the start of 2017, he made public that he suffered from dementia, just like his mother and grandfather.

Children
David had been married several times, and had children with his second and third wives. With Sherry Williams, he had daughter Katie Cassidy, who followed in her father’s footsteps and became an actress. She’s known for roles in TV shows like Arrow and Gossip Girl. With his third wife, Sue Shefrin, David has a son named Beau Cassidy. Beau posted an emotional picture on his Instagram.

I’ll always, always love you
