Everybody is putting a little bit of sugar in their garden because of this Facebook post

TV maker and British biologist Sir David Attenborough (92) recently shared an important post on Facebook in which he urges people to all place a spoonful of sugar in their gardens. Thousands of people have seen this post by now and many people have done what Sir David asked. But why is this so important?

If you’ve read Sir David’s post you’ll understand why people are following his advice en masse.

Bees

In his message, the biologist explained that the bee population around the world has decreased with one third over the last five years. The consequences of this decline are bigger and more serious than you might think. If the bees were to go completely extinct, humans would only have four years left to live. Yes, indeed. This has to do with the bees pollinating crops, which is something us humans benefit from directly. Because of the bees, we can grow strawberries, apples, tomatoes, berries, bell peppers and other types of fruits and vegetables we need.

Spoonful of sugar

This is why it’s extremely important to help these sweet little creatures a little. Sir David explains there’s a very simple but very effective way to do this: “Bees can become tired and they simply don’t have enough energy to return to the hive which can often result in being swept away. If you find a tired bee in your home, a simple solution of sugar and water will help revive an exhausted bee. Simply mix two tablespoons of white, granulated sugar with one tablespoon of water, and place on a spoon for the bee to reach.”

People are already helping the bees and finding out it really works:
