Take good care of your bed

It’s often recommended that you replace your mattress every eight to ten years. Every year, we spend about 3000 hours in our beds, so our mattresses go through quite a lot over the years. To get the most out of your mattress, you’ll need to take proper care of it. If you don’t do this, you’ll notice it’ll start to smell or become a little uncomfortable. With these eight tips, your mattress will last a lot longer.

Mattresses are quite expensive, so you want to get the most out of them.

1. Rotate

Back in the day, it was necessary to rotate mattresses quite often because of the springs inside of them. These days, though, most mattresses don’t have these big springs anymore. However, we still recommend rotating your mattress every month. You do this to prevent sags and valleys appearing on them.

2. Mattress pad

You can buy a good mattress pad for not that much money. This protective layer is easy to wash, which is very handy because you’re not going to be able to fit your mattress in the washing machine, will you? This way, the pad will catch all the moisture, dust and oils so you don’t get any stains in your actual mattress. Are you having flashbacks to those creaky, plastic-like, uncomfortable covers from back in the day? Don’t worry, these days there’s a whole arsenal of different types of pads and covers so you’ll be able to find one that suits your needs best.

3. Standing on the bed

Do you regularly yell at your kids that they have to stop jumping on the beds? You’re right to do so, because this could cause both the wooden supports and the mattress itself to break. But even if you don’t have children, you might make this mistake sometimes: standing on your bed to reach a shelf, for example. The localised pressure of your body weight can be enough to cause a big sag in your mattress or even break the wooden supports.

4. Pets

Yes, it’s incredibly cute to sleep in a bed together with your dog or cat, but this doesn’t exactly help maintain the good state of your mattress. The hairs and skin flakes your pets leave behind will make everything dirtier much quicker. Plus, they might (accidentally) make small tears in the mattress with their sharp nails or even destroy it altogether.
