Make green pool water clear again with these three simple steps

Your pool water will be clear again if you follow these tips!

Everybody wants to cool off in some way or another during this insanely hot weather. If you can’t cool down at work or at home, there’s only one solution left. Get into the water! And what better place to do that than in your own backyard? It’s not difficult to put up a swimming pool and fill it with water, but what if that water has turned green?

This is how you can fix that.

Algae

The water in your pool can turn green because of algae and the sun is the biggest culprit when it comes to this problem. Algae are microscopic organisms that use light energy to obtain carbohydrates and to grow and multiply. Usually, these algae are killed by chemicals like chlorine or Anti-Algae, but the sun and an imperfect water balance can cause algae to grow anyway. If you want to prevent this from happening, you should limit the pool water’s exposure to the sun by covering up the pool after using it. Also add the right amounts of chemicals to the water.

Steps

Has the damage already been done and do you have green pool water? You’ll want to get rid of the algae in the water and we’ll tell you exactly how to do that. Quick note: it might take a little while; you won’t have clear pool water again over night.

  • Step 1: Check the water in the pool with a good tester. The TA and pH values of the pool are especially important. A good TA value lies between the 100 and 150 ppm and a good pH value lies between 7.0 and 7.4.
  • Step 2: You’ll need to shock your pool! Add chlorine pool shock to the pool water. A normal value for chlorine in pool water lies between 1 and 2 ppm. If you’ve got algae in your pool, you can push this up to 3 ppm, but don’t use too much chlorine!
  • Step 3: If the water is really, really green, you should also add some Anti-Algae.

If the water is really beyond all hope and you’re using an inflatable pool, the best thing might be to just throw out the filthy water, then clean the pool and refill it with clean water.
