This trash can trick is super useful!
Since we found out how useful baking soda truly is, we’re a very happy bunch. You can clean your stainless steel surfaces with it, make your exhaust hood look like new, and give your wine glasses back their shine. And it turns out, you can also use it to keep your trash can smelling fresh!
Your trash can will develop some nasty smells; it’s inevitable. Or is it?
Food scraps
Although we change the trash bag pretty often and clean the can regularly with cleaning products and a cloth, those nasty smells keep hanging around it. That’s not so strange if you think about it, since we throw food products as well as their packaging in there. These food scraps will become warm and then they’ll produce those nasty smells. We can clean our trash cans more often to get rid of the smells, but how do you prevent them from developing in the first place?
Baking soda
You can easily prevent those nasty smells by using baking soda. If you’ve got a plastic trash can, sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda on the bottom of the can before putting in the trash bag. If you have a metal can, however, you’ve got to take an extra step to make sure the can won’t develop rust spots. Fill a coffee filter with a generous amount of baking soda and tie it shut with an elastic band. Place the closed coffee filter at the bottom of the trash can before putting in the bag. Say goodbye to those nasty smells!
