WARNING: Do you wear hair ties around your wrist? You’d better stop! It’s really dangerous!

After reading this, you’ll never wear hair ties around your wrist again!

Almost every woman who has long(ish) hair does it: putting a hair tie around your wrist when you’re not wearing it in your hair. This way, you’ve always got one within reach and you don’t have to grab around in your bag looking for one. It’s pretty ideal, right? Unfortunately, it’s also very dangerous!

Bump
It seems so harmless, putting a hair tie around your wrist. How much could it really hurt? The answer is: a lot. An American lady called Audrey Kopp ended up in hospital because she always wore a hair tie around her wrist. A bump that continued to grow formed in the exact place where she wore her (occasionally wet) tie. When Audrey went to the hospital to get it checked out, the doctors discovered she had a pretty serious infection. And what was to blame?

Infection
The hair tie. It turned out to be a true breeding ground for bacteria. These bacteria had gotten into Audrey’s blood through her skin and capillaries. Because of this, she didn’t have just one, but three different bacterial infections.

Blood poisoning
If the doctors hadn’t treated the abscess when they did, Audrey could have been dead. Audrey’s doctor stated that wearing a hair tie can cause infections, which can lead to blood poisoning, with death as a possible result. So, we’d all better watch out! To prevent infections, you could regularly use a new hair tie or clean it thoroughly with boiling water. We think the best solution is to just put your hair ties in your pocket or purse. That way, you can be sure you’re safe!
