Shocking: This is what your phone can do to your spine!

phone

Wow, we didn’t expect our phone to be able to do this…

Chances are you’re reading this on your phone. And chances are you’re doing that while leaning forward sitting down on the toilet (we don’t judge). You probably think doing this on a daily basis can do little to no harm, but you’re wrong!

When you look down to your phone you place an extra weight of 26 kilograms (57 pounds) on your spine.

Extra weight

That extra weight isn’t exactly good for your neck and posture. What makes it even worse is that people spend about 2 to 3 hours on their phone in this position on average. When you straighten your spine, your neck only has to carry the weight of your head, which is about 5 kg. When you lean your head forwards, however, your spine has to carry a lot more weight. And the further you lean your head, the more weight your put on your spine…

Stiff neck muscles and pain

If you lean your head forward in an angle of 15 degrees, you place 12 kg extra weight on your spine. Leaning forward at a 30 degree angle makes for 18 kg extra, 45 degree for 22 kg and 60 degrees causes an extra weight of 26 kg. This wrong posture can cause pain and tension in your muscles, tendons and ligaments. Eventually, sitting in a wrong posture can have you end up with a proper headache, both literally and figuratively. So, what’s the solution? It sounds pretty stupid, but it is to keep your phone straight in front of your face.
