We’re all familiar with one of the ingredients of toothpaste: fluoride. That’s because once in a while, there’s a big fuss about this substance because it’s said to be harmful. So, what’s the deal?

“Nine out of ten dentists recommends this toothpaste!” This is a slogan we often hear in toothpaste commercials, spoken by people with a bunch of extremely straight, white teeth. But what do dentists recommend? A toothpaste that strengthens the enamel of your teeth and helps decrease the chance of caries. Fluoride is the ingredient in toothpaste that strengthens the enamel and thus helps your teeth be protected against caries. However, fluoride has been on a list of toxic substances since 2014. How can that be?
