Falling asleep in front of the television can have big consequences

It’s probably happened to you at some point: you’re enjoying a nice film or series on the television after a long day at work and the next thing you know you wake up suddenly, thinking “what am I doing here?”. Whoops, you fell asleep in front of the TV. We’ve got bad news for anyone thinking this isn’t a big deal. Falling asleep in front of the television can have big consequences!

Do you notice yourself nodding off in front of the television? Turn off the TV and go to bed!

Mood

We recommend paying attention to not falling asleep while you’re binge-watching your favourite show from now on. It might seem innocent, but it’s worse for you than you think! Research shows that it has an effect on your mood. According to Dr Guy Meadows, this has to do with the light that’s emitted by the television. You can even get depressed from sleeping in front of the TV. That’s pretty shocking!

Depression

“We’re designed to sleep in the dark. When the sun comes up, the light receptors in the retina at the back of the eye tell us to wake up by inhibiting the release of melatonin, the hormone that makes us sleepy,” Dr Meadows explains to Daily Mail. So, when you’re sleeping in front of a bright TV screen, you might be preventing yourself from falling into a deep sleep. And since your sleep and your mood are connected to one another, your mood is affected by you not sleeping enough. If you do this on a frequent basis, you might even get depressed. Of course, you want to prevent that from happening, so get off the sofa as soon as you notice you’re nodding off and go to bed. Your body will thank you!
