A lot of the tested mineral water contains plastic

Microplastics have been discovered in the bottles of mineral water from a large number of well-known international water brands. That’s what American research has found out. Microplastics are minuscule plastic particles. It’s still unclear whether these tiny plastic particles are bad for people or not.

According to the research, more than 90 percent of the water samples contained microplastics.

Mineral water

This is the biggest American study done into mineral water until now and it tested over 250 bottles from nine different countries. Among others, big brands like Evian, San Pellegrino and Gerolsteiner were studied. The researchers mostly found polypropylene, nylon and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), but other types of plastic were discovered as well. In every liter of water they found around 325 plastic particles.

Bottling

Sherri Mason, professor at the State University of New York, led the research. She told AFP that she thinks these plastics enter the water during the bottling process. Most of the plastic probably comes from the cap of the bottle itself. A summary of the study was posted on the website of Orb Media, and it also found out that glass bottles contain microplastics as well. Exactly how much of a danger these microplastics are to our health isn’t clear yet.
