Gross! This commonly used machine is one of the dirtiest things in your home!

machine

Nearly everyone forgets to clean this machine!

We all try our best to keep our homes as clean as possible. Vacuuming, mopping, dusting and polishing: it’s a never ending story. Yet overlooking something is very easy and it happens to the best of us sometimes. Unfortunately, the places that are easily overlooked are usually also the places that are the biggest sources of mould and bacteria. This is also true for the machine you turn on first thing in the morning: the coffee maker.

It could probably do with some cleaning!

Coffee with a bit of mould

We’d never really thought about this before and perhaps you hadn’t either, but the truth is that the old water that stays behind in your coffee maker can cause mould to grow. Especially the coffee machines that only make one cup at a time (like a Nespresso machine) are very sensitive to this issue. When you make regular filter coffee, all the water in the reservoir is used up at once, but with a single serve coffee maker some water is often left behind. And that water will sit there over night or even longer! The perfect spot for bacteria and mould to grow, especially in warmer weather. That’s not what you want to find in your cup of joe, right? The solution: cleaning it!

Vinegar

Empty the water reservoir after using the coffee maker and use fresh water every time. Make sure you dry the reservoir with a clean tea towel after using it. We also recommend cleaning the reservoir once a week by rinsing it with white vinegar. Add four cups of vinegar to the reservoir and leave it to sit for half an hour. Then let it run until the entire reservoir is empty. Next, run a cycle with just water until the vinegar smell is gone.
