You can use olive oil for more than just cooking!

Olive oil: everybody has a bottle of it stored in a kitchen cupboard. You probably use it to fry with or to make salad dressings, but did you know there are many more things you can do with this oil? You can even use it for cleaning!

These are five things you can clean with olive oil.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel is often difficult to clean: you have to use the proper products if you don’t want to scratch the stainless steel surfaces. It might sound strange, but olive oil is the perfect product to clean this with. Drip a few drops of olive oil onto a paper towel and rub it over the spots on your stainless steel using circular motions. Is the stainless steel surface you want to clean very dirty? Then you should first remove the worst of the dirt using vinegar.

Leather

Do you own leather chairs or sofas and have they gotten a bit ugly? Before you decide to throw them out, try sprucing them up a bit with olive oil. Put a bit of oil on a soft cloth and use this to gently rub the leather surface. The oil will cause the wrinkles in the leather to decrease and it will help the leather get back its former shine.

Kitchen cupboards (or other wood cupboards)

Oil has a very good effect on wood. It provides the wood with a deeper colour and causes it to shine. You can treat wood by mixing two parts olive oil with one part lemon juice and using this to rub the wood with. Leave it to sit for a good while before you touch the wood again.

Pans

Do you have a cast iron pan with stuck-on food that you can’t seem to get out with dish soap? Try using a layer of olive oil. Pour a small layer of the oil into the pan and add a few grains of sea salt. Scrub the pan with this and then rinse it properly.

Silver

Everybody knows silver needs to be polished once in a while. Olive oil is a great product to use for this. Dip a soft cloth in some oil and use this to rub your silverware or silver jewellery with. Not only will your silver objects be cleaner because of this, they will also get back their original shine.
